SIMONE RICCI NAMED NEW NORTH SAILS OPTIMIST CLASS LEADER
North Sails proudly names Simone Ricci as Optimist Class Leader, bringing global coaching expertise and a deep commitment to youth sailing development.
Simone Ricci joins North Sails with a clear mission: to elevate the Optimist class through innovation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to youth sailing. With over 15 years of coaching experience and a track record of developing world champions, Ricci is poised to lead North’s Optimist program into an exciting new chapter.
Paul Hobson, Global Head of One Design at North Sails, commented: “Simone Ricci is widely recognized as one of the most respected Optimist coaches in the world. He has worked with top-tier sailors and built an impressive international following. His expertise and passion for the class will be a tremendous asset to our global One Design community.”

As Optimist Class Leader, Ricci will work closely with North Sails to develop high-performance sails tailored to the evolving needs of young sailors. His approach emphasizes not only technical excellence but also mentorship and community.
“I was inspired by the opportunity to push the limits of what’s possible in the Optimist class,” Ricci shared. “North Sails is a brand that represents excellence across all levels of sailing, and I’m honored to be part of this journey.”
“What excites me most is the chance to collaborate with great minds and help sailors and coaches around the world,” he said. “This role allows me to continue doing what I love—coaching without borders—now with the support of the most iconic brand in sailing.”

Ricci started coaching at just 19 and has since developed some of the world’s top Optimist sailors. His proudest moment came in 2019 when his small beachside club team delivered impressive performances: Marco Gradoni won his third World title and the Team Race World title, Federica Contardi took gold at the European Championship, and teammates Niccolò Pulito and Sophie Fontanesi finished in the top ten. Ricci also played a key role in Weka Bhanubandh’s 2022 Optimist World Championship victory, further strengthening his reputation as one of the sport’s most respected coaches.
Ricci’s coaching philosophy emphasizes effort, resilience, and joy in the journey. “I want my sailors to work hard, but always with a smile. The mindset is more than 50% of what it takes to succeed. Being an athlete means more than just having great boat feel—it’s about never giving up, learning from loss, and staying ready both physically and mentally.”

When it comes to sail development, Ricci is very impressed by North Sails’ latest Optimist models. “The sails are fast, easy to trim, and adaptable to different sailor styles and spar materials,” he said. “But what truly sets North Sails apart is the team behind every sail. It’s a collective effort driven by passion and expertise.”
Looking ahead, Ricci’s goals are clear: to connect with sailors worldwide, grow the presence of North Sails in the Optimist class, and help young athletes reach their full potential—on and off the water.
