Vendée Globe

Faster, Stronger

The 2016 Vendée Globe fleet will start with a maximum of 30 boats. Each boat will have completed a qualification sail and IMOCA certificate prior to October 1st in order to take the start line. North Sails works closely with skippers to establish a shared vision for the race, and creates a cohesive sail plan that will power them to achieve unique goals for the race. Acknowledging that constraints of time and budget are common concerns, and that every program is different, North Sails prides itself on offering a varity of solutions with a diverse product range. Bottom line, when a skipper starts the Vendée Globe feeling confident and comfortable with their sail choices, the first mission has been accomplished.

North Sails is performance and scientific R&D. Team Banque Populaire has the highest expectations in sailing. They are in it to win so North Sails is the logical choice. I do not know how else I could achieve my goals but with the North Sails way of working and products.

– Armel Le Cléac’h (FRA), Banque Populaire, Winner, 2016 Vendée Globe

The sails’ shapes are more refined, the material / textile are a big step in terms of weight to stiffness ratio. I think we have substantially gained more horse power. The boat is clearly faster and more responsive.

– Jérémie Beyou (FRA), Maitre Coq, 3rd place in 2016 Vendée Globe

I am very happy with the product. Over five years now I have built up a great relationship with the designers at North Sails, and we have done a great job in developing all the sails and shapes. Above all, it’s also important that as with every solution we have chosen, there are two elements. There is the product but also the team with whom you either succeed, or not, to work with. And today, it’s true that with the team at North Sails France we have succeeded in making some beautiful sails.

It’s true that with the 3Di technology there is no longer a discussion about how to win races. The technological advances are such that the choice is quite simple from the moment we found the team of designers with whom we started to develop good sails and shapes. And today we are happy to continue our adventure for the next Vendée Globe with North Sails.

– Vincent Riou, PRB, 4th participation in 2016 (retired after striking UFO)

After the last Vendée, I had a good idea of what I would do for the next boat. Looking back it is now radically different, and I feel confident about our choices because of all the design and testing work that has gone into it. The sails match the boat and my way of sailing, and I’m happy with the performance and durability – it’s a well rounded inventory for this race.

– Armel Le Cléac’h (FRA), Banque Populaire, Winner of 2016 Vendée Globe

Our relationship with the skippers is the key to success. The most important factor is that we share the same vision of what needs to be done and what sails are required for each boat.
