OPTIMIZED SAIL SHAPE

North Sails has developed a library of multihull sail shapes customized to each sail’s needs. Multihull sails require precise engineering for straight masts while rotating masts enhance aerodynamics. Increased headstay sag and high righting moments allow for flatter, specialized sails that perform efficiently upwind and at tighter wind angles.

OPTIMIZED SAIL SIZE

Without a backstay, multihulls can use large-roach mainsails optimized for area, aerodynamics, and handling. The Square Top Mainsail enhances upwind and downwind performance, while the High Roach Mainsail offers a traditional, stowable option for cruisers. High-clew designs accommodate deck features like hard tops, and wide shroud bases support varied downwind sails, tailored to wind angle.

OPTIMIZED SAIL STRUCTURE

With higher righting moments, multihulls require strong, low-stretch sails to handle increased loads. North Sails uses advanced tools to optimize strength and flexibility, with 3Di composite technology providing durability, minimal stretch, and a 3D-molded shape. Tailored finishing touches like reefing systems, luff hardware, and furling systems address the specific needs of multihull sailing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What are 3Di sails, and why are they ideal for my multihull?

A: 3Di sails are lightweight, easy to handle, durable, and offer excellent shape retention. Built on a 3D mold, 3Di sails are made from the world's lightest, strongest, most durable filaments available creating the the longest-lasting (zero delam), most aero-optimized sails on the market.

Q: Why is sail selection important for a cruising multihull?

A: The wind load increases quickly on multihulls, and you need sails that are built to handle the load spike when the apparent wind moves forward. Every boat will be different, but understanding your sailing angles and crossovers is vital to getting the most out of your boat and having a safe and more enjoyable sailing experience.

Q: What can multihull sailors do to make sailing easier for short-handed crews?

A: User-friendly furling systems and partial furling are excellent ways to reduce sail power. Correctly sized torque cables, which can be added to older sails, improve downwind furling sails. Reef-able headsail structures offer quick options to balance the boat and reduce power. Well-spaced reefs are valuable to your team; smaller, incremental changes in reefing are not suitable for short-handed setups.
