CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS

"Our family’s Beneteau First 10R, BLAST, is a regular competitor on the Lake Ontario racing circuit, achieving outstanding results thanks in part to our suite of 3Di North Sails. Since investing in 3Di a few years ago, we’ve seen clear performance gains. The sails are exceptionally durable, hold their designed shape, and are easy to trim for optimal VMG, all of which contribute directly to our race success."

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A: A Code Zero is a flat free-flying reaching sail designed for close-reaching angles in light to moderate air. Originally developed for offshore racing it has become one of the most versatile sails in any inventory. Rating rules like ORC and IRC treat it as a downwind sail so it typically carries no rating penalty for racers. For cruisers it fills the gap when the apparent wind is too far forward for a gennaker. The North Sails Helix Code Zeros offer a wider wind angle range and easier furling than ever before. You can find out which Code sail suits your programme best in our full guide.

A: Symmetric spinnakers are mirror images on both sides of a centre line and are flown from a pole. They work best for running and deep downwind angles. Asymmetric spinnakers are shaped like a genoa with spinnaker girth, flown from a tack point or bowsprit and work best on a reach and broad reach without the need for a pole. For most modern racing boats the asymmetric is simpler to handle and covers a wider range of angles. Symmetric spinnakers still have their place on boats that regularly sail deep downwind angles or race in one-design classes that specify them. For a full breakdown read asymmetrical vs symmetrical spinnakers explained.

A: Modern high-performance racing sails are built on North's 3Di technology. These are spread filament composite sails moulded to their flying shape on a full-size 3D mould. At the top of the range 3Di RAW uses carbon fibres for the lowest weight and best shape-holding as used in America's Cup and IMOCA programmes. For club racers and offshore programmes NPL SPORT and NPL TOUR laminates offer strong performance at a more accessible price point. It is not just the raw materials that make the difference but how North applies them. Learn more about the difference between racing sails and cruising sails.
